SEPA - Scottish Environmental Protection Agency - Policy Document 40:
‘Policy on Regulation and Expansion of Caged Fish Farming of Salmon in
Scotland’
“One of the major difficulties facing the industry is the
proliferation of sea-lice in marine salmon farms. The lice do
considerable damage to the farmed fish and there is now growing
acceptance that stress induced by increased lice burdens on wild
salmonid species linked to fish farm infestations may be contributing to
the decline of these wild stocks where farms lie close to migration
routes.”

Sea Lice Control
This project is to develop a product to control sea lice, a debilitating
and ubiquitous ectoparasite of farmed salmon. Sea lice management
(treatments, labour, and losses) in Scottish farmed salmon costs £33m
annually and £305m worldwide.
NeemCo Riddance™ is most likely to be added to fish feed (an ‘in-feed’) and
taken up by the salmon so when the sea lice take a blood meal from the
salmon they receive a dose that stops them feeding again. The product
has no effect on the host fish or when consumed.
NeemCo is working in collaboration with the Scottish Salmon Producers’
Organization who represent 95% of the Scottish Salmon farming industry
and the University of Stirling at the Marine Environmental Research
Laboratory (MERL) at Machrihanish in Kintyre.
Pilot trials have clearly demonstrated the potential for NeemCo to
develop a highly effective control for sea lice, sharply limiting
parasite numbers. Previous work by NeemCo in other markets has indicated
that it should be possible to produce an environmentally benign
commercial product.

Introducing Riddance™ to control sea lice in farmed salmon worldwide, could significantly reduce the £303m costs of sea lice management.
Riddance™ also aids regulators by reducing the use of current controversial sea lice controls and governments through tackling the competing interests of salmon farmers, fishing, and environmentalists.
The introduction of an effective natural a product benefits wild salmon fishing interests by controlling sea lice. |

A natural biocide containing extracts of the Neem Tree
for sheep dipping and spraying |
Ectoparasite Control for Sheep
NeemCo Riddance™ is a natural biocide containing Margosa Extract. This is an extract of the seeds of the Neem Tree which has been used for almost 20 years to control crop pests in organic farming.
•Effective protection of sheep and goats against ectoparasites:
•Permanent parasites:
•Sheep lice
•Sheep-scab mites
•Semi-permanent parasites:
•Midges and other biting insects
•Flies (Blow, Head, and Bot-fly)
•Sheep ticks
NeemCo Riddance™ is not a neuro-active contact biocide, and so there is no immediate ‘knock-down’ effect. Its effect on parasites is antifeedant and repellent. Within hours it has an effect on parasites, preventing lice from feeding, and repelling insects from feeding and egg-laying. Eggs laid have a low viability. In the longer term, it prevents development in the larvae of parasitic insects. Within a few days, the parasite infestation is dramatically reduced due to the antifeedant and repellent effects. |

Crop Pest Control

Azadirachtin is the only alternative to conventional insecticides currently available for managing most sawfly pests and white pine weevil. This bioinsecticide is safe to mammals and birds. It does not pose a significant risk to most other non-target organisms including bees, fish and aquatic insects at effective dosages, and it degrades readily in the environment. The short Neem tree seeds residual life of azadirachtin-based insecticides when applied as a foliar application, although attractive from an environmental perspective, can be a significant limitation for forest management. This limitation may be overcome by applying neem formulations that can persist for a year or more, systemically into trees. For example, systemic applications into large pines for pine false webworm control is a promising approach for selective treatments, including seed orchards, small pockets of infestation, and ornamental trees in urban environments. The cost of neeminsecticide formulations is higher than most conventional insecticides, but their low impact to non-target organisms makes them an attractive alternative. This is even more so with systemic applications, which further reduce any impacts to non-targets, or hazards to handlers.
