NeemCo supports exploratory university research into a cause of blindness.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is a rare disease in which amoebae invade the cornea of the eye and that can lead to blindness. It is nearly always associated with contact lens use as Acanthamoeba can survive in the space between the lens and the eye.

Through a collaborative university research project NeemCo is supporting a small study into the potential of a neem compound as a therapy against Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Initial trials on a neem-based control for pine weevil in plantation trees, especially pine, are showing very encouraging results.

Currently only α-cypermethrin is currently used against Pine Weevil, and this is likely to be phased out by EU legislation within two years.

Several delivery methods are under evaluation.

It is expected that our product would be part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme.

NeemCo receives a valuable Scottish Government / EU awarded a European Fisheries Fund (EFF) grant to bring its sea lice treatment market.

EFF provides for capital grants to assist across a range of measures to support fishing and aquaculture. NeemCo gained its grant through priority, “aquaculture, inland fishing, processing and marketing” - in this case to “improve the quality of produce and conditions in terms of human and animal health”. Priority is given to supporting micro and small enterprises.

In Scotland the aid scheme for Aquaculture is managed by the Scottish Government’s Marine Scotland whose support and assistance in the application process is acknowledged.

The grant provides the funds for NeemCo’s scientific work on the sea lice project being supported and funded by the Scottish Salmon Producers Organization (SSPO). For more information, please follow the appropriate links below.
